CHILDREN’S BICYCLE PROGRAM GETS A NEW SHOP!
BIKE SHOP SUPPORTS YOUTH EDUCATION.
The youth development program at Boise Parks and Recreation has grown so much a new shop was needed.
Kids can now get started in the vocational education program that teaches bicycle mechanic job skills.
The program with this new bicycle shop facility can now offer vocational education and job training.

The bicycle school program is designed to educate youth about mountain biking while promoting positive character traits such as self-reliance, perseverance, and respect for the self, others, and the natural environment. 
 
IN 2007 NEARLY $3,000 WAS DONATED BY SWIMBA FOR THE BICYCLE SCHOOL SHOP FACILITY.

In 2002 SWIMBA contributed $3,000 in proceeds from the 2002 Fat Tire Festival to the bicycle school education program for kids. A matching $3,000 Grant from REI sporting goods store outfitted the program with 12 bicycles, tools and a trailer. The program is being run in cooperation with Boise City Parks and Recreation to provide education, trail ethics and environmental awareness. The program has grown over 200% and will better serve the community with this new bicycle shop/school.

Q:  How do I register for Camps?
A:
3 Easy Ways
1.    Online: www.cityofboise.org/parks

Q: Can my child/I use my own bike?
A: Yes !.  Thanks to REI we do have bicycles and helmets available, but you are more than welcome to use your own.  We will inspect your gear for cracks and proper fit.

Q: What do I wear?
A: Wear clothing that you are comfortable sweating and moving in.  In general you will be moving, sweating, stretching, eating, drinking and lounging.

Q: What do I bring?
A: Important: water bottle, snacks (generally 100 calories per hour), good attitude, and sunscreen.  We will provide helmets.

Q: Where do I meet?
A: Events will depart from and return to Fort Boise Community Center.  There may be some times where we meet other places but this will be pre-arranged.

Q: Where will the rides take place?
A: With the exception of the Racing Clinic all rides will take place in the Boise Valley or along the Boise Front.  Ride length will vary depending on the age and fitness of each group.

Program Discriptions
Mountain Bike Boise     
Come explore the single track trails on the Boise front.  Learn skills such as proper bike maintenance, equipment responsibility, technical skills, safety, sharing, and respect. Enjoy the outdoors with other young people in a fun and positive way.

Intermediate Mountain Bike Boise   
Class limit 12
This class is designed for those with mountain bike experience and a strong desire to improve.  We will focus on downhill techniques, jumping, cornering, and training.  Participants must have a strong interest in technical development.  This class is taught by one of Boise’s Pro. or Semi Pro. riders.   Camp is based out of Fort Boise Community Center, 700 Robbins Road and is co-sponsored by SWIMBA.

Ride with Girls   
 Class limit 12
Learn to ride and take care of mountain bikes with other girls.  Experience the Boise hills, learn technical skills and receive sound nutritional advice from local women.  Learn to take risks, listen to your intuition, deal with frustration, and celebrate athleticism with other females.

Intermediate Bicycle Mechanic    
Class limit 10
Have you ever wanted to be able to work on your own bike or wondered about the life of a bike mechanic?  Refresh yourself on the basics, learn to rebuild a hub, lateral true of a wheel, diversity of modern wheels, lube a bottom bracket, replace your cables and housing, adjust and replace brake pads, adjust you derailer, replace components.    Be an apprentice mechanic at a local bicycle shop.  Camp is based out of Fort Boise Community Center, 700 Robbins Road and is co-sponsored by SWIMBA.

Beginner Bicycle Mechanic    
Class limit 10
Have you ever wanted to be able to work on your own bike?  The beginner bicycle class will focus on the essential elements necessary for self-reliance.  Learn to fix a flat tire, patch a tube, how to wash and lube your bike properly, including cables, tighten loose parts, adjust derailers, signs of wear and tear, learn what to pack for trail riding success.  Learn to problem solve on the spot mechanical issues.  Can you say “MacGyver”?

This program is designed to offer young people a positive and fun way to get involved in mountain biking while helping them build self-esteem.  It will also be a catalyst for learning such skills as proper bike maintenance, equipment responsibility, safety, sharing, and respect.  Through the sport of mountain biking students develop a strong sense of self-esteem, while discovering the potential within them.

What are Boise MTB Camps?
Camps offer people a positive and fun way to get involved in mountain biking while helping build self-esteem.  
Week long camps will be run through the Boise Parks and Recreation Community Program, in cooperation with the Southwest Idaho Mountain Bicycling Association (SWIMBA).

The program is intended for kids ages 8-18 however two select camps will accept adults and one is designed for kids ages 6-8.  The camps will offer riders a fun and educational mountain bike program, while rallying around the positive culture of trail riding and outdoor recreation.  All camps have limited space so register soon!  Phone-in is the easiest method.

Thanks to a generous grant from REI matched by Swimba we are able to provide bicycles, helmets, tools, and a trailer. A moble education program.

What about special Adventures?
Due to numerous requests from private groups we have designed a program to bring mountain biking to you.  With our trailer and bikes we are able to provide bicycles for up to 12 individuals and a trail leader will facilitate groups.

Special Adventures:  A program tailored to meet your time frame, ability levels, and goals, rates vary.

Scholarships
Participant fees have been established at a reasonable rate with the desire that all children can participate in camps and events.
